Impressive iOS Calendar App Sunrise Comes To Android

Most calendar apps on Android have two major issues: they’re plain ugly, and they are not so user-friendly. Sure Google Calendar is a straightforward solution, but when it comes to third-party alternatives nothing beats the enormous options on iOS. One such fantastic calendar app Sunrise Calendar for Apple devices has now made its way to Android. And it looks exquisite, to say the least. As much as I thoroughly enjoyed using it on my friend’s iPhone, I’m loving it on my humble Android daily driver. The app boasts a truckload of handy features, including agenda, week and month view modes, Google Maps previews for directions, weather information, and Facebook integration to never miss important events and birthdays again. It’s available now for all Android devices running 4.0 or higher, but sadly there’s no tablet version at the moment...

The benefit Sunrise has over rival substitutes is its clean, eye candy UI and ability to sync content with major social media services such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter  and Foursquare. When launched for the first time, you can connect your desired account right away. The app also syncs data from iCloud Calendar which should make switching between iOS and Android a breeze.  You can of course add any account later on from the Settings screen.

Apart from the fact that it supports both Apple and Google calendars natively, Sunrise’s impressive visual design is another important aspect. The menus look slick and navigation feels snappy all around its different sections. The main calendar throws in an incredible amount of information at your disposal and you can easily switch view mode on the fly. The main view of the app combines a standard calendar view with scrolling ability to preview future agenda. You can also quickly create new events and custom define every nitty gritty detail about them.

As mentioned earlier, Sunrise has deep integration with Google Maps which means you can easily find directions on the map about any particular event held at a specific location. Additionally, the app comes with a home screen agenda widget out of the box, which means you can keep an eye on important events without even entering the main interface.
Sunrise Calendar’s Settings screen is also full of handy configuration options which allows users to tweak the app as they see fit, such as ability to specify weather temperature unit, configure notifications, specify week start day and set Sunrise as default calendar.

Although Sunrise is probably the best calendar app on Android so far, it’s not without its shortcomings. For example, there’s no tablet support as of this writing, and the homescreen widget only shows agenda view and doesn’t let you switch to other view modes. Additionally, there’s no search box to quickly find current events.
Sunrise has also made available a web version which means you can now access your synced data across mobile and web. You can its Android version for free directly from Google Play.
